Associate Pastor of Shepherding

Hope Bible Church of Columbia, Maryland is a 300+ member, 20-year-old diverse body of believers centrally located between Baltimore Maryland and Washington, DC. We seek to glorify Jesus Christ by the expositional preaching of His Word – both for the edification of His saints as well as reaching the lost.  We also strive to worship Christ alone in spirit and in truth, and warmly share the love of Christ with all those inside and outside the church.

As HBC continues to pursue God’s unfolding plan for our church, we are now actively seeking candidates for the position of Associate Pastor of Shepherding.  The Associate Pastor of Shepherding will serve as a member of the Elder Board of Hope Bible Church, working under the Senior Pastor to help implement the purpose and vision of Hope Bible Church, primarily as it relates to shepherding and equipping the saints for more godly living and effective spiritual ministry.

General Position Description:

The Associate Pastor of Shepherding is a paid, full-time position that works in concert with the senior pastor and non-staff pastors to oversee and/or develop the following:

  • Pastoral counseling and discipleship ministries
  • Care ministry
  • Small groups
  • Various Bible classes/courses

In addition, the Associate Pastor will assist with decision making and research on the Board of Elders, and provide pulpit fill for the Senior Pastor as needed.


Position Responsibilities:

The applicant must be a man of prayer, a man of discipline, a high-energy person, excited about local church ministry, possessing vision for a local church’s ministry potential, having a sincere love for God’s people, and able to take the initiative to develop effective ministry in a variety of areas. He should also possess strong relational abilities to connect both with believers and unbelievers. He should be available to participate in multiple ministry meetings weekly, especially available in the evenings and weekends to implement strategic training and church events. He should desire to learn from the senior pastor to deepen as a man of God and in wisdom for pastoring God’s sheep. He must be one who values and maintains a strong home life even while engaged in a demanding church schedule.


Position Requirements:

  • Education: Master of Divinity (or related field) or higher
  • Elder qualified according to the standards listed in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1
  • Minimum 3-5 years full-time, staff-pastor experience including regular pulpit fill, ministry leadership, hands-on discipleship, classroom Bible teaching, and counseling
  • A mature family man who loves his wife and children, demonstrates wisdom in his home life, does not have excessive debt, and has a well-ordered home
  • Adheres to Hope Bible Church’s doctrinal statement, “What We Teach
  • Adheres to the Philosophy of Ministry of Hope Bible Church. In particular, he should have a conviction about the practice of expository preaching in the local church, biblical counseling, a doctrinally driven ministry, and agree with the leadership structure of a plurality of elders led by a senior pastor.
  • Preferred: Ordained to the gospel ministry by a council of ordained evangelical pastors



  • Demonstrates strong personal communication skills, a hard work ethic, humble approachability, and ease of relations within the church
  • Works well with different ethnic groups
  • Demonstrates clear leadership skills and has shown success in organizing and advancing ministries
  • Knows how to communicate skillfully with the senior pastor, the church office, the elder board, the deacon board, and the congregation
